  • Belt Promotions!

    Belt Promotions!

With every new stripe or belt promotion, comes more responsibility than the last. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu promotions are much different than karate promotions or any other martial arts forms. On average, someone who trains karate 2 times a week for 5 years, can obtain a black belt. Unlike, in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it takes 8 to 10 years of constant hard work, dedication and training to earn that black belt around your waist. With Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, every belt (other than Black Belt) is required a minimum of 4 stripes. Once you get to that fourth stripe on your belt, you get promoted to the next level of training and responsibility. There are 16 different belt colors you can ....

8 Small Diet Changes to Turbo Charge Your Jiu Jitsu If you want to reach peak performance in your Jiu-Jitsu, you will need to not only train like a champion, you will also have to eat like a champion. That means NO JUNK FOOD

  • Should you Compete?

    Should you Compete?

By: Emily Kwok “SHOULD I COMPETE?” I am asked this question a lot. I often respond, I’m not sure if you should, but here’s why I do. In the beginning it had more to do with curiosity than anything else. There were so few women in jiu jitsu that I just wanted to know how I would fare against someone built more like me. Training for my first tournament gave me focus and discipline, but most of all, it taught me something about authenticity and truth. Making the decision to put a lot of hard work in and putting yourself under internal and external pressure forces you to confront yourself and everyone around you. ....

  • What to Expect on Your First Day of Jiu-Jitsu

So you’ve finally made the plunge. After a couple days, or maybe weeks, of looking up Jiu Jitsu academies in the area, you’ve finally set an appointment for your first trial class and are ready to enter the wonderful world of Jiu-Jitsu. So, what now? Here are a few tips to make that first day a little easier for you:
Wear comfortable athletic clothing. For women, we recommend a pair of shorts or leggings, a sports bra, and a t-shirt or compression top. For men, a pair of shorts- preferable with no pockets so your fingers don’t get stuck in there!- and a t-shirt or compression top will do.
