So you’ve finally made the plunge. After a couple days, or maybe weeks, of looking up Jiu Jitsu academies in the area, you’ve finally set an appointment for your first trial class and are ready to enter the wonderful world of Jiu-Jitsu.
So, what now? Here are a few tips to make that first day a little easier for you:
- Wear comfortable athletic clothing. For women, we recommend a pair of shorts or leggings, a sports bra, and a t-shirt or compression top. For men, a pair of shorts- preferable with no pockets so your fingers don’t get stuck in there!- and a t-shirt or compression top will do.
- Bring a bottle of water.
- Have an open mind- You may be feeling a little nervous or anxious, and that’s perfectly OK. The movements in Jiu-Jitsu aren’t something you do every day and you may feel a little uncoordinated at first. That’s OK! We’ve all been there!
- Make sure you eat a healthy snack before class and get plenty of rest the night before. You want to make sure you have fuel in your body and plenty of energy for class!
Expect to be sore the next day- You’re using your muscles in an entirely new way. - Arrive at least 10-15 minutes before scheduled class time. This will give you a chance to meet the instructor, sign the waiver or any necessary paperwork, and get a tour of the academy.
- Have fun!
With these tips, you are well on your way to enjoying your first day of Jiu-Jitsu! Congratulations! Jiu-Jitsu will take you on an exciting journey where you’ll meet some of the best people in your life and build your confidence all while getting in great shape and adopting a healthier lifestyle.
